Dhanteras

Dhan - Wealth
Teras - Thirteenth day

Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th day of the dark of the month of Ashvin and marks the beginning of the five day celebrations of Diwali festival.

On this day Dhanvantri, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, emerged from Kshirsagar with a pot of Amrut. Therefore this day is also known as Dhanvantri Jayanti. Dhanvantri is the God of Health and Welfare.

As we approach the end of the Hindu calendar, we offer Pooja to Laxmiji, the goddess of wealth. We thank her for all the wealth and prosperity that she has given us during the year.

In the old days the wealth of a person was measured by the number of domesticated animals owned by him. Today wealth is measured by money, cars and houses that a person owns. But the true wealth is that which is earned through hard work and honesty and abiding by the codes of Sanatan Dharma. Farmers and householders in the villages, who own cows and bullocks, decorate the horns of their animals with different colours and worship them as well. Homes and temples are cleaned and rangoli designs are displayed at the entrances and doors and windows are lit with lamps to welcome Goddess Laxmi. On this day many people go out to buy utensils and jewellery as precious metal represents good fortune.
